Panaji police arrest man for trespass, voyeurism

first_imgThe city police on Thursday night arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly breaking into homes at night in his underwear and staring at women and occasionally stealing cash, in an apartment complex on the outskirts of the city. The accused, Tulsidas Shirodkar, resident of Taleigao near here, was taken to Panaji Town police station, after residents of Adwalpalkar Horizon collectively complained to the police. “The accused has been booked under Sections 457 (trespass), 380 (theft), 354(c) (voyeurism) on Friday,” a police spokesperson said. “In three cases, complainants have said that money was also missing from the house, so we have booked him for theft,” he added. In the complaint, some residents, whose homes had been broken into, alleged that Mr. Shirodkar was in his underwear with oil smeared on his body.“I woke up once and saw him staring at me. I shouted in alarm, but he had disappeared before someone could arrive,” a woman said. Another victim said that he was lying next to her and her relative when they were sleeping on the bed. “I felt something next to me and shouted when I felt it was another person. But at that time I thought it was a dream because when I put on the light nobody was there,” the woman said. The police have activated a cluster approach dialogue with residents of various housing complexes in North Goa and housing societies and residents have been advised to streamline their security systems, strictly implement tenant verification systems and network with police personnel of the nearest station.last_img read more

first_imgBurnley boss Dyche backing Taylor for England callby Paul Vegas13 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveBurnley boss Sean Dyche says Charlie Taylor can win an England call in the future. The left back only made his first Premier League appearance of the season off the bench against Everton on Saturday. “I think it’s interesting for me, over these years, and now we’re very confidently talking about Burnley players being in the England squad,” Dyche said.“I remember when Tom Heaton got his first call up, it was ‘wow, Burnley haven’t had an England player for however many years’, and now we’re talking about it free and easy, saying, okay, Tom, Keano (Michael Keane), Corky (Jack Cork) got one out of the blue of course, you could argue last season for Westy (Ashley Westwood), just if you were going on form, and performances.“I still think there’s a lot of room and time for Charlie Taylor to go into that thinking, along his development line. Erik’s doing well at the moment, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got a lack of belief in Charlie.“It’s good to say Burnley players are being talked about as freely as we are with the national side, and other international players as well.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

San Francisco Federal Reserve names Mary Daly as president

first_imgWASHINGTON – The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco on Friday announced the appointment of Mary Daly, a longtime Fed economist and a labour market specialist, as the next president of the regional bank.Daly replaces John Williams, who became president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank in April. When she begins Oct. 1, Daly will be among three women who lead one of the 12 Fed regional banks. The Fed, under pressure from activist groups, has made efforts to diversify its leadership.Daly, 55, who joined the San Francisco Fed in 1996 as a research economist, was appointed director of research in 2017. She has studied wages and jobs and economic inequality and has written several books. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Ph.D. in economics from Syracuse University. As San Francisco Fed President, Daly will receive a vote on interest rate policy at the December meeting of the Fed’s policymaking committee. After that, she will not have a voting right until 2021. Each year, the Fed’s interest rate committee rotates voting rights among its regional presidents.“I believe very strongly in the Federal Reserve’s mission and in the important role we play in helping to create strong, stable economic conditions in all corners of the country that allow individuals and businesses to prosper,” Daly said in a statement. In April, Daly said she thought the economy “is very strong and the outlook is very bright.” She downplayed concerns that low unemployment might lead to rapid wage gains and higher inflation. Instead, she noted that “there is little sign of this in the data.” She also argued that even if wage gains accelerated, the Fed “would have time to adjust policy to limit the impact on overall price inflation.”Those remarks suggest that Daly may lean toward the “dovish” camp of Fed policymakers. The Fed’s doves typically focus more on the central bank’s mandate to maximize employment than on its other mission to keep inflation under control.Last year, Daly co-wrote an influential paper that argued that wage growth has been slowed by an aging U.S. population. Young workers, who typically earn relatively low pay, are replacing a larger generation of older, higher-paid baby boomers, who are increasingly retiring.Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton and a leading Fed watcher, noted that Daly’s research also highlighted the disproportionate impact of the Great Recession on young adults, who absorbed huge amounts of student loan debt just as wages for entry-level workers were weakening.Daly will provide needed expertise to the Fed board on the job market, Swonk added. At 3.9 per cent, the unemployment rate is near an 18-year low. But with an unusually large proportion of Americans neither working nor looking for work, setting Fed policy is trickier than in the past.If the Fed raises short-term rates only slowly, the economy may remain strong enough to pull more of those people into jobs. But the risk is that inflation could rage out of control. On the other hand, if Fed policymakers raise rates too aggressively, the economy could tip into recession and cause job losses. Those questions “will determine the pace at which rates go up,” Swonk said. “She will provide the Fed key insight on that.”last_img read more

Enbridge proposes priority contracts for Mainline oil export system in 2021

first_imgEnbridge reported moving a record volume of 2.785 million bpd from Canada to U.S. in November and said it remains focused on finding incremental ways to increase capacity. Its Line 3 expansion project is expected to add 370,000 bpd to take the Mainline system to 3.225 million bpd capacity when it starts up in late 2019.The company estimates that oilsands production is about 450,000 bpd above local refining and pipeline capacity and forecasts that as much as 600,000 bpd in new output could be added by 2025.Enbridge announced $1.8 billion in new investments on Tuesday, including the $265-million purchase of pipeline and terminal assets in northern Alberta from oilsands producer Athabasca Oil Corp. The Calgary-based pipeline, utility and power company said it will also spend US$600 million to buy a 22.75 percent interest in the Gray Oak Liquids Pipeline, which is under construction and expected to deliver light crude oil to Corpus Christi, Texas, starting in late 2019.That project is expected to help supply an offshore shipping port in the Gulf of Mexico proposed by Enbridge with partners Kinder Morgan Inc. and Germany-based Oiltanking GmbH, the company revealed.Enbridge also committed about $800 million in spending on four natural gas transmission expansion projects in the United States that are to come into service in the 2020-23 time frame. The company said it will raise its dividend by 10 percent for next year and anticipates another 10 percent increase in its dividend for 2020.(THE CANADIAN PRESS) Oilsands giant Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. has charged the system is a leading cause of the current “dysfunctional” oil market in Western Canada, where a lack of pipeline export space as production rises is blamed for recent steep discounts in oil prices.“We’re seeing pretty good interest in this concept around priority access,” said Enbridge CEO Al Monaco on a webcast from the company’s investor day in New York on Tuesday, adding negotiations with shippers have started in advance of a July 2021 expiry of the current agreement. He said shippers and Enbridge will both get toll and volume certainty if the new system is adopted.“And that’s part of this discussion. That the shippers will have an interest, we will have some interest, and it’s up to us to line those up,” he said.Enbridge plans to hold an open season to gauge shipper interest early next year and file an application with the National Energy Board to make the change, Guy Jarvis, president of liquids pipelines, said.He added he doesn’t think the regulator will deny permission because it allowed the Trans Mountain system, now owned by the federal government, to make the same switch from common carriage to a hybrid contract-spot shipper system.center_img CALGARY, A.B. – Enbridge Inc. is proposing a fundamental change in how it assigns space on its Mainline pipeline system that will allow up to 90 percent of its capacity to be reserved for priority customers. The 2.85-million-barrel-per-day network of pipelines, the largest export option for Western Canadian producers, operates as a common carrier, where customers nominate the volume of crude they would like to ship each month. Those nominations have exceeded the volume available for much of 2018, leading to “apportioning” or cutbacks in all shipments, which have angered many producers.last_img read more

Teen killed in Jammu grenade attack Hizb operative held

first_imgJAMMU: A teenager was killed and 32 others were injured Thursday in a grenade attack by suspected terrorists in the crowded general bus stand area in the heart of the city, officials said. This is the third grenade attack by terrorists in Jammu bus stand since May last year, viewed by security agencies as an attempt to disturb communal harmony and peace in the city. Mohammad Sharik, 17, a resident of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, who was among 33 people brought to the hospital, succumbed to splinter injuries in the chest, the officials said. The injured included 11 residents of Kashmir, two from Bihar and one each from Chhattisgarh and Haryana, the officials said. The person who threw the grenade has been arrested, police said, adding he is a Hizbul Mujahideen operative and had reached Jammu from Kulgam this morning. Police say they identified him using CCTV footage. The police said the grenade was under a bus at a bus stand in the heart of the city. Most of the injured, an officer said, are bus drivers and conductors. It is unclear if there were people inside the bus. Police parties along with sniffer dogs and forensic experts rushed to the spot and launched a search operation to catch the attacker, officials said. The attack comes a week after the Indian Air Force carried out air strikes on the biggest terror camp of Jaish-e Mohammad in Pakistan’s Balakot. Women get raw deal from Bihar NDA in ticket distribution

first_imgPatna: The BJP-led NDA in Bihar – which has been accusing the opposition of stalling a bill envisaging 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies – has resorted to tokenism when it came to distribution of tickets to women in the general election. According to the list released by the NDA on March 23, only three women candidates have been allotted Lok Sabha tickets in the state – one each by alliance partners the BJP, JD(U) and the LJP. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’ The opposition Grand Alliance – comprising the RJD, Congress, RLSP, HAM (S) and former Bollywood set designer Mukesh Sahni’s VIP – has so far named just nine candidates for the polls. Election to the 40 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases in Bihar between April 11 and May 19. The ruling Janata Dal (United) has fielded Kavita Singh from Siwan constituency, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Rama Devi from the Sheohar seat. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K Veena Singh of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) is contesting the election from the Vaishali constituency. In 2014, too, the NDA had given three tickets to women, two by the BJP and one by the LJP, while the JD(U) which was then not part of the BJP-led coalition, allotted two seats for women. The BJP had contested 30 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the last general election, while the JD(U) fielded candidates in all but two seats. As per the seat-sharing arrangement in the NDA this time, both the BJP and the JD(U) are contesting 17 seats each, leaving six constituencies to the LJP. The parties, in their defence, claimed that women did not get adequate representation in their list of candidates as they were contesting fewer seats this time. Devesh Kumar, the state unit vice-president of the BJP, contended that the party believes in “empowering women”, but the seat-sharing arrangement in the state did not leave them with much of an option. “Yes, it is important that women should be given more tickets in elections, but since we are contesting fewer seats this time as compared to the last time, we had to take many factors into consideration. “The BJP government at the Centre believes in empowering women. One can clearly see that women are holding important portfolios at the Centre – External Affairs (Sushma Swaraj) and Defence (Nirmala Sitharaman). Our Lok Sabha Speaker (Sumitra Mahajan) is a woman,” he pointed out. Echoing similar sentiments, JD(U) spokesperson and MLC Niraj Kumar said, “It was difficult for the party to accommodate more women this time as it was contesting just 17 seats in the state.” The JD(U) spokesperson also listed the decisions taken by the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar in the interest of women, such as 50 per cent reservation in urban local bodies and panchayati raj institutions and 35 per cent reservation in all government jobs. “Our party has been strong votary of women’s reservation bill. If the bill is passed, it would become mandatory for parties to give women tickets,” he added. Two regional parties have shown a way out of chronic tokenism in their distribution of tickets to women this time. In West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress has fielded 41 per cent women candidates for the general election, which the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha has reserved 33 per cent of its tickets for women.last_img read more

Morocco Waitress Kidnapped and GangRaped

first_imgCasablanca- Rape, in its most inhuman forms, still prevails in Morocco despite all efforts to combat it. A waitress was recently gang-raped in Meknes.According to daily Assabah, a 19-year-old waitress was kidnapped then gang-raped by four people in Meknes. The three suspects were presented to the Prosecutor on charges of kidnapping, violence and rape. The young waitress was kidnapped at 4:00 a.m. at the café where she works, before the eyes of the café owner and his customers. According to local police, the café clients could not intervene to save the girl as the three suspects were drunk and armed with swords they used to kidnap her. The waitress told the police that she had already been the victim of rape when she was 17, but never dared to report that to the police because of her fear of the consequences. The abolition of Article 475 of the criminal code, which allowed rapists to flee justice by marrying their victims, does not seem to change the bitter truth about rape in Morocco. The rate of violence and child rape are still high in the kingdom, and the reasons for that mainly are attributed on the lack of stricter laws to punish the perpetrators.   © Morocco World News. Mens basketball Ohio State looking for right mindset to take down No

Ohio State junior forward Jae’Sean Tate slams home a dunk against Navy on Nov. 11 in Annapolis, Maryland. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorFollowing the attack that occurred on the Ohio State campus in Columbus, the Buckeyes men’s basketball team took a moment during their Tuesday press conference to reflect on the events, and express their thanks for the University Police officer who responded.“We got to keep issues off the court, but, I mean, it’s scary,” said OSU junior forward Jae’Sean Tate. “Somebody lost their life yesterday, and more people were injured. It’s terrible but I’m glad that we have police around who responded very quickly, contained the situation before it got even more out of hand.”While the investigation is ongoing, and students and staff on campus attempt to return to life as usual in Columbus, the Buckeyes will play at No. 6 Virginia on Saturday evening. The Cavaliers are 6-0, and have defeated their opponents by an average of more than 29 points per game.Virginia already was going to be a stout challenge coming into the game, but Monday’s events might weigh heavily on the minds of those in attendance and on the athletes. Senior forward Marc Loving said the Buckeyes will be looking for focus even after the attacks.“I know some things that happened yesterday are going to be in our mind during the game,” he said. “Things that happened could have a negative effect on, obviously, the morale on campus and this team. But when we step in this gym, we try to block out all aspects whether it’s the classroom, or it’s any distraction that’s possibly going on and just hone on in the time we have in practice together and just get better.”Saturday’s contest will be just the second true away game for the Cavaliers. Led by redshirt junior guard Darius Thompson with a 10 points-per-game average, Virginia is coming off an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA tournament.Last season, Virginia finished with a 29-8 record, and was behind only North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tate said OSU will be focusing on quicker ball movement in practice to try and overcome the challenge ahead.“We hold onto the ball a little too long,” he said. “Other than that, you know when we catch the ball we immediately know what we’re going to do with it, not catch it and think about what we’re going to do and allow the defense to set up and get back in the gaps.”On defense, Virginia is allowing just 41.8 points per game which gives it a +31.5 scoring margin when matched with the team’s average points per game. Combine that with a with a suffocating defense that has picked up 7.7 steals and 5.0 blocks per game, and the Cavaliers are by far the biggest test for OSU so far this year. Even with the seemingly insurmountable task ahead, OSU coach Thad Matta is ready to see what his team can do. “I like where this team is,” he said. “I mean, obviously, we’re playing not a really good basketball team, we’re playing a great basketball team. Very, very impressed with Virginia. I’m excited to play them all night just to … you know the game ends and we get a pretty good gauge where we are. I think that we’re making strides in the right direction.”Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. in Charlottesville, Virginia. read more

I doubt there will be many changes at all, as it’s clicking along really well.”After a turbulent few years in which Garden & Gun was sold to Indigo and skipped an issue in order “to help shore up business”, the publication seems to be recovered. The upcoming October/November issue is double in size compared to the 2010 October/November issue in both advertising and page count. According to Darwin, G & G will be announcing a rate base increase from 225,000 to 250,000 in the coming months.Garden & Gun, released bimonthly, produces twice weekly newsletters. There is also the G & G Club, a three tiered membership package that includes the basic Adventure Society group, the mid-range Sporting Society and premium Secret Society package. Priced at $35, $100 and $500, each club offers a subscription and additional privileges, including an events calendar, discounts on merchandise and complimentary tote bags and hats. Members of the Sporting Society and Secret Society have a longleaf pine seedling planted in their honor; Secret Society members receive five free gift subscriptions and are invited to an annual SS Gathering, featuring Gardens & Gun staff and special guests. About three and a half years after what many viewed as a shocking move to join then-freshly launched Southern lifestyle magazine Garden & Gun from Field and Stream, editor-in-chief Sid Evans (pictured) is leaving G & G to join Time Inc.’s Lifestyle Group. Slated to begin in mid-September, Evans will act as group editor for five Time Inc. brands: Cooking Light, Southern Living, Coastal Living, Sunset and This Old House. Evans says, “There are tremendous upsides to joining Time Inc.: upsides in print, upsides in digital, upsides in social media and other opportunities. It’s too great of an opportunity to pass up.”David DiBenedetto, who also joined Garden & Gun around the time of its launch, moves from his previous role of executive editor to replace Evans as EIC. Evans says of the succession, “Dave is a hell of an editor and a great guy. I have no doubt he’ll continue the success of G & G.”In working with recent hire Kim Alexander (who joined Garden & Gun from Time Inc. last month as digital media editor), a redesign for the website, as well investing in other ways to get content to readers between print issues, is next up for DiBenedetto.last_img read more

Vimeo Publishers Partner on VOD Service

first_img CBS Interactive’s TV Guide.com, TV.com and Metacritic, for example, will be able to serve up some of the shows and movies that the site frequently profiles. Visitors who search for specific titles on the sites will now see on demand programs in the results listings. Who doesn’t like low-maintenance, incremental revenues? IAC’s Vimeo, a digital video platform, announced today that it’s making its on demand video service available to other publishers. The service embeds Vimeo’s player into the publisher’s site and allows visitors to rent or buy ad-free videos. Launch partners include The Atlantic, CBS Interactive Media Group and TEN: The Enthusiast Network, and each is using the service in unique ways that complement either their existing video offerings and/or align with a particular editorial strategy. The Atlantic, which has already been curating videos from a variety of sources, is now able to monetize some of that content through an embedded Vimeo player with select titles for sale or rent.center_img TEN is using a more customized strategy, partnering with Vimeo to use its platform to set up storefronts for the publisher’s sports brands, including TransWorld Motocross, TransWorld Skateboarding, TransWorld Snowboarding, Surfer and Powder. Publishers can either have total control over the content that’s available through the storefronts or let Vimeo curate it for them. There are currently 50,000 videos in Vimeo’s library.last_img read more
