Prime Minister insists will not allow to divide the country

He dismissed fears that the drafting of the new constitution will result in the division of the country or bring harm to Buddhism. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today insisted that the Government will not leave room for anyone to divide the country.Making a special statement today on the proposed Constitutional changes, the Prime Minister said that the entire process will have the participation of all political parties and the public. He said that for the first time, the process to draft a new Constitution will also see the involvement of social media. The Prime Minister said that as a Sri Lankan, Sinhalese Buddhist he will do his utmost to protect the Nation and ensure unity.Wickremesinghe said that the several amendments have been sought to the proposed Constitutional Assembly, particularly by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which is part of the coalition Government. The Prime Minister invited all other political parties to submit their proposed amendments to the Constitutional Assembly in order to reach a consensus.He said that drafting a new Constitution in a key requirement for the country and played down concerns being raised on the process being adopted by the Government by some members of the opposition, particularly former Foreign Minister, Professor G.L Peiris.
